The Douglas SBD Dauntless was the mainstay of the US Navy's dive bomber fleet for much of World War II (). Produced between and , the aircraft was adored by its flight crews which praised its ruggedness, dive performance, maneuverability, and heavy armament.   This is the first book I've read of this type that follows the war experiences of a dive bomber pilot in World War II. I've read other books about bomber pilots (I remember Harry Crosby's "On a Wing and a Prayer" especially fondly) but this is (as far as I know) the first book of this type by a dive bomber pilot from the war.5/5(4).

It is sometimes difficult to remember that before laser-, infrared-, and satellite-guided bombs came into being, delivering ordinance from aircraft was hardly a precision process. Over the next several years, he flew a variety of vintage and historic aircraft, including a pre-WW II Navy trainer and a restored dive-bomber. The latter became the subject of his first book, The Dauntless Dive Bomber of World War II, published in It established the format for many subsequent books, operational histories of U.S. Navy Born: , Oregon.

This book does not attempt to astound the reader with lots of hyperbole.

Instead it takes a simple, down to earth approach to to the history of an airplane, and it's pilots who did astounding things. The book is not dry, nor is it filled with exaggeration: it is not too hot, or too cold. "The Dauntless Dive Bomber of World War II" is just by: 4.

The Dauntless was one of the most important aircraft in the Pacific War, sinking more enemy shipping in the War in the Pacific than any other Allied bomber. In addition, Barrett Tillman, in his book on the Dauntless, claims that it has a "plus" score against enemy aircraft, meaning it was credited with more victories over enemy planes than losses due to enemy cturer: Douglas Aircraft.
